Country music is not what it was. The glitz and the glamour that will surround tonight’s Country Music Awards in Nashville bears little relation to the ‘white man’s blues’ of old, seeming increasingly to be little more than pop music in cowboy hats. If you’re looking anywhere for that original spirit, it seems you’ve a better chance of finding it in the music that these days goes by the name alt-country. This is where Houston quartet Grand Old Grizzly step in, with a sound which mixes the likes of Uncle Tupelo with Tom Petty and the Old 97s.
