Bloody unrequited love, eh? It’s a bugger and no mistake. It’s also responsible for a sizeable proportion of popular music, so we can’t be too down on it. To the canon now is added ‘St Lucy’s Day’ by Songdog, a trio led by Lyndon Morgans who hail from the same town in south Wales – Blackwood – as the Manic Street Preachers. Morgans is an award-winning playwright so it’s no surprise the lyrics hit home, but it is perhaps the instrumentation – the relentlessly hopeful harp arpeggios and the echoing drums – which most recall that enlivening hollowness of the unrequited lover. An album, Last Orders At Harry’s Bar, is out on October 7.
