Valerie June’s second single off upcoming album ‘Pushin’ Against A Stone’ is a considerably more feisty affair than the first taste she offered us – the delightfully old school ‘Workin’ Woman Blues‘ (we’ve already noticed a clear aversion to g’s). This is blues of an altogether more forceful kind as Valerie is joined by a full band, but still steeped in the oldest traditions of the delta as the rhythms recall old slave songs. The Tennessean is promising a mix of country, blues and gospel on her first full-length collection, due out later this spring, and these first two singles suggest she intends to fully explore the boundaries of these sounds.
