Some things in life are best kept simple and Katie Blount is here to prove that’s the case with this delicately understated, stripped back performance of ‘Orion Sky’. With its straightforward, unfussy chord structure and a seemingly effortless melody, Katie allows all attention to be drawn to her lyrics – an element of songwriting that she deems to be of the utmost importance. Taking inspiration from such beloved wordsmiths as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, Katie aims to transport her listeners into her carefully woven stories, using her lyrics to convey the twisting and turning emotional intricacies of her songs.
You’ll be pleased to hear that ‘Orion Sky’ forms a lyrical aperitif for a bigger body of work, a debut album entitled Dark Water to be released on the 31st January. The release will consist of nine carefully crafted songs that, as demonstrated in this performance, have been kept beautifully simple, stripped back and given plenty of room to breathe. This first foray into the music scene is made all the more impressive by the fact that Katie wrote, recorded and produced the album in a recording studio she built herself in her own home – no mean feat. It’s certainly a labour of love and such dedication and ingenuity will surely set Katie in good stead for making an impact on the folk scene in 2020.
You can keep up with Katie on Facebook and also pre-order/pre-save the album.
Katie will also be doing an interview on ‘The Folk Show’ at BBC Radio Cambridgeshire at 9:15pm on Monday the 27th January which you can tune into live here
