Summer is well and truly over and we are now entering that grey and irrepressibly damp period of the year. So what better way to lift ourselves out of our seasonal slump than with a second dose of the sounds of Clara Sanabras?
Teaming up again with Mike Outram on electric guitar, Clara Sanabras’ original song ‘Hear the Lightning, See the Thunder’ provides an energetic antidote to the inclement October weather. Sanabras’ percussive style of playing on her resonating ukulele conjures up sunny rhythms, despite its stormy title, matched by equally colourful lyrics. The highly evocative and slightly surreal imagery in this track is somewhat reminiscent of 60s psych folk, sung with a beautiful clarity and an impressive vocal range. The influence of such singers as Joni Mitchell and Anna Calvi can clearly be heard in Sanabras’ easy delivery. Featured on Clara’s most recent release, Fugue to the Floating World, ‘Hear the Lightning, See the Thunder’ continues the album’s central theme of escapism, and this performance provides some much needed respite from a drab English autumn.
Clara Sanabras has earned herself a formidable reputation both in the folk world and in the wider UK music scene, having worked with such names as Sir Ray Davies, Nigel Kennedy and Jarvis Cocker, as well as gracing the stages of Buckingham Palace, The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican.
