Just in time for spooky season, Renee Maskin’s ‘Sage’ is set in a haunted house. Directed by John Decker, the music video is captures the eeriness of isolation mixed in with a gorgeous, antiquated aesthetic. It’s a subtle otherworldly mystique that is perfectly fitting for its autumn release — and of course for the song itself. Maskin deftly navigates its fine-drawn arrangement, creating a progressive folk movement replete with memorable string melodies. Her instantly identifiable vocal delivery marries perfectly to the delicacy of the tune, and makes it one of our favourites from her in recent times.
‘Sage’ is a cut from off of Maskin’s forthcoming, yet-to-be-titled next album, coming in 2025. Regarding the song, Maskin says, “Some people will only show up for you when they think there’s something in it for them. The theme of “Sage” is a haunted house metaphor for a failed friendship.”
