Chances are if you’re reading this blog, you’ve heard of Roo Panes. We’re just niche and British enough to warrant it. Beyond that, though, if you do, it’s probably because this bloke has been pretty adept at producing earworms over the past several years. Who doesn’t remember ‘Open Road’ as a total folk-pop bop, or the deeply personable introspection that he brought to the table with the progressive acoustic stylings of Paperweights?
He’s made some positively strong strides in an upwards direction since first landing on the indie folk circuit with Once in 2012. Now, the singer-songwriter is continuing to prove both the sincerity of his work and his incredible ability to continue innovating with his newest single, ‘A Message to Myself’.
Produced by Mt. Wolf’s Bassi Fox, the power duo undeniably traverse brand new territory for the burgeoning household name on his latest. ‘A Message to Myself’ continues the emotional retrospective that began with Paperweights, but tackles it more from the reserved, layered, and ethereal throngs of such performers as Sigur Ros or Bon Iver. The track pulsates, repetitious piano acting as its instrumental center while Panes sings with astounding vulnerability and restraint.
It’s nothing short of beautiful and makes us here at For Folk’s Sake that much more excited for his next full-length offering. Until then, you can listen to his latest tune below.
