‘Summertime Clothes‘ is one of the best tracks on one of the best records of the year, Merriweather Post Pavilion. If you don’t own the album, stop reading now and go and buy it. The real challenge for Animal Collective now is to make the single worth getting as well.
Featuring three remixes, but no new material, it’s not.
The first remix, by Dam-Funk, would be brilliant — featuring some fantastic synth runs — but for the insistently annoying drum beat that sounds like someone getting shot repeatedly. Leon Day’s remix is a hectic, yet ghostly, Jamaican-influenced destruction of the original song featuring pan pipes and electronic effects that is impossible to enjoy as a piece of music. After a promising start, the final remix (by Zomby) ends up a heavy-handed, thumping, clunking mess of a track. All these remixes might work at a club night, but are totally unlistenable in the light of day.
Buy the album, skip the single.
