Brown Trout Blues, taken from Flynn’s debut album A Larum, is three minutes of delicate perfection. ‘I could be someone else but you wouldn’t know me if I was’ sings Johnny on his bittersweet ode to complicated love.
Members of The Sussex Wit appear on harmonies joining in then fading out again in a sumptuously languid arrangement of the song, incorporating the band’s trademark brass and strings.
The title of the track is a nod to Flynn’s late father, with whom he used to go trout fishing. This track which is at the same time desperately sad, and incredibly sweet couldn’t be a more worthy homage.
