Edie Carey coolly croons on her studio cut of ‘The Chain’, navigating a warm, electric atmosphere pieced together by an exciting full band arrangement. Here, she strips things back, presenting her single more in the way she had written it—in her kitchen with fellow singer-songwriter, Megan Burtt. Burtt joins Carey on this rendition of the tune, both songstresses offering a sweet, emotive performance. In the song, they offer heart-rending themes that ultimately offer comfort, like a musical shoulder to lean on. I
“’The Chain’,” Carey recalls, “is about feeling like we are never enough in the eyes of another, that no matter what we do or try to prove, their view of us remains unchanged. It’s a song of realization, of recognition and, ultimately, of letting go.” It’s the latest cut from Carey’s forthcoming, eleventh album, The Veil (3 June), produced by Scott Wiley and featuring Rose Cousins and Mai Bloomfield.
