Forest Sun is the product of his parents, folk-singing, earth-loving hippies from upstate New York. As the story goes, his dad literally built the floor that Dylan stood on at Woodstock’s Bearsville Studios. Beyond that, though, Sun has given himself to roots music of all manner and has seen many happy returns in kind—drawing from folk, country, and traditional roots to be certain, but also reggae, soul, gospel, and jazz. The multifarious singer-songwriter commands his alternative approach to roots performance with aplomb, and this time around he’s doing so in paying his respects to John Forgerty & CCR alongside fellow artist David Luning.
On their cover of the classic, ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain?’, Sun tells For Folk’s Sake…
“I first met David Luning at a Recording Academy listening event at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. This was one of the last events at Fantasy Studios before they closed their doors for good. I like the song David played and we soon discovered we are both UCSC Alumni. A few days after he got back from touring Europe David came in the studio to record this classic Creedence Clearwater Revival tune with me. I love the deceptively simple music and lyrics of this song. John Fogerty is a great writer and I hope we do the song justice.”
