Matthew Edwards is back in Birmingham. After two decades living in the United States Edwards, formerly of The Music Lovers, has moved back to his hometown. Along the way, he gathered enough material for Folklore, his second album with the Unfortunates. “After 20 years living in California I returned to Birmingham,” he said. “Folklore is the chronicle of that return.” It makes sense then, that this here song is named after the UK’s second city, even if its big-sky sound might initially have you thinking it’s written about Alabama’s biggest city. The lush instrumentation never overwhelms the feeling of space in the music, a slight edge of menace. Folklore is due out on May 26, but if you can’t wait that long to here more, you can catch Matthew and his band on the handful of upcoming dates listed below.
