It’s Christmas 2013 | Alessi’s Ark on what makes a good Christmas

Alessi’s Ark (or Alessi Laurent-Marke) has been a firm favourite here at FFS for a long time. From her delightful debut album Notes from the Treehouse to this year’s bold, surprising offering The Still Life, on Bella Union we’ve been following Alessi’s impressive career for the past five years.

We’re absolutely delighted to have Alessi on this year’s Christmas record, For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas 2013. Her version of ‘Joy To The World’ is simply lovely.

FFS asked Alessi about her favourite festive traditions…

What inspired your choice of song?
I think the lyrics ring out in a quiet and powerful way.

What makes good Christmas music?
The best Christmas music carries a warming glow in its imagery.

What’s your favourite Christmas song?
I really like Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree’. Her voice makes me smile.

What’s your favourite festive film?
At different ages I’ve had rotating favourites. ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ might be the winner overall.

What are your Christmas traditions?
I love taking a walk in good company, especially when the skies are clear and bright.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given?
I like making presents. I’m not sure if they are the best but I do try – – it’s for the receivers to answer!

What would you like for Christmas this year?
I have a very unwell relative and I hope she has a beautiful day.

What do you think the meaning of Christmas is?
Spending time with those you care about and channelling your love and gratitude to those you love who are far away geographically or no longer here with us.

What’s your top Christmas tip?
Take a walk on Christmas eve before hitting the hay and look up at the sky.
