Lovely folkette Alessi has recorded a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic ‘Simple Man’.
After a youth spent crooning along to the Almost Famous soundtrack, For Folk’s Sake can attest that ‘Simple Man’ is nigh-on impossible to make sound nice. But Alessi and her Ark’s lovely version lends the song an otherworldly edge. And when she sings ‘troubles will come and they will pass’ we’re pretty sure we can feel our souls being soothed.
Alessi told FFS: “‘Simple Man’ is one of my Dad’s favourite songs. He has a great LS tape at home and our other favourite on it is ‘Tuesday’s Gone’.”
She continued: “Ben [Lovett – the keyboard player from Mumford and Sons who also moonlights as a producer] recorded the song while we were working on an EP at his home. I played the song at the bottom of the staircase, his home is like a temple — very calm and quiet. He added some tapping and airport sounds while he waited to board a plane a week or so later.”
Alessi has kindly made the track available for a free download. Head over here to listen online or to make it your very own.
