Over the coming weeks FFS will be submitting the same set of questions to the Schmercury nominees. Today, Roddy Woomble answers on behalf of Drever McCusker and Woomble, who are nominated for their album Before the Ruin.
The Schmercuries is FFS’s best album prize (apart from there is no prize other than the glory of being deemed brill, ace AND skill by our lovely readers). You can see the nominated albums and vote for your favourite to win here.
Congratulations, you’ve been nominated for a Schmercury. How do you feel?
I feel good. I’ve never been nominated for an award. Unlike John & kris
What did you think of the Mercuries list this year?
Some good records, some I’d never heard. The same as normal.
Aside from your own, what’s your favourite album on the Schmercuries list?
I haven’t heard many of them. So I couldn’t pick one.
What album(s) have we missed off the list?
I like the Vetiver album ‘Tight Knit’ a lot, and Bob Dylan ‘Together Through Life’.
What d’you think about panel prizes vs voted for by the fans?
Fans make as good judges as any.
What are your thoughts about the album?
I’m still very proud of it, and I enjoy getting to sing the songs in concert. We had no idea how it would sound when we were making it, but Kris & john are so good that it wasn’t going to be rubbish!. Generally speaking, I felt it was a bit overlooked, but those who bought it seem to love it, so that more than makes up.
What’s your favourite song on the album?
Either ‘stuck in time’ or ‘all along the way’
We’re pretty passionate about the album as a format. Do you think you would ever eschew albums in favour of releasing a series of digital tracks as and when?
No.
What’s your favourite album ever?
That’s impossible to answer. Bob Dylan, the Band, the grateful dead, Miles Davis, I’d pick a record by all of them.
If we had all the money in the world to spend on an actual prize for the winning band, what would you like it to be?
A recording studio.
