Today’s session track is ‘Winter Nights’ from Scottish multi-instrumentalist STAGG, showing us some fancy accordian playing.
‘Winter Nights’ is taken from STAGG’s new visual album 3.0. The “visual” part comes from all the songs being played live on camera, with triggered MIDI instruments and loop pedals to fill out the sound. This is accomplied by handwritten lyrics, drawings and 3D animations. The result is an eclectic mix of modern songwriting and more traditional folk centring an instrument that’s less commonly the lead.
3.0 started as a lockdown project, STAGG tells us “I had to get an album out, but I knew, working by myself, I needed parametres or it would never be finished. As well as lockdown Instagram, I’d also been working really hard on my live set up until the pandemic, but I’d been reliant on a friend whipping out their phone at a gig. I wanted to document my live set properly with beautiful videos.”
