Back in the 90s there was a recurring advert that went: “You know more [insert artist name] songs than you think you do.” It was easy to be put in mind of this frankly slightly low-wattage slogan when following the coverage of the death of folk legend Pete Seeger this week. Many of his most famous tracks are closely associated with other artists, like this one, which was perhaps most famously performed by Marlene Dietrich, or ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ which is synonymous with the Byrds. But that’s really just a sign of how deeply his roots dig into so much of the music industry – nowhere more than in the contemporary folk we love to celebrate.
