Following on from last year’s In The Wake, North Wales singer-songwriter Al Lewis is preparing for the release of the follow-up later this year and has delivered the first taste in the shape of Our Lines Remain, a lovely little EP which once again features FFS favourite Sarah Howells to the fore.
Lewis’ easy ear for a tune shines through on these four songs, led off by the shimmering ‘Lines Upon The Sand’, which sees the voices of Lewis and Howells, and Lewis’ gently licking guitar, beautifully complimented by Mary Erskine’s cello. ‘To Be Good’ flips between sharp verses by Lewis alone and beautifully sweet choruses with the help of Howells and Erskine.
‘Blackbird and the Magpie’ might just be the highlight of the record with its slowly building melodies and beautiful lyrics about the search for identity before the fine ‘Yours Alone’. As he has done before, Lewis is once again drawing on some of the finest traditions of songwriters like Nick Drake and James Taylor to create beautiful songs.
