Queen of Denmark is amazing; the album by John Grant, that is. He and Chris Pearson from Denver have released six studio albums as The Czars and this is the first work on his own, backed by Midlake. Queen of Denmark is an honest and very frank rediscovery of himself after his combustion and the many problems with past record labels.
Queen of Denmark is arresting in beauty through John Grant’s baritone earthy voice, string arrangements, delicate piano, backing harmonies, sensuous flute and twinkling bells. This album, overwhelmed with ballads, breathes versatility and flexibility musically and profound pain in its lyrics and is a wonder of dichotomy – the beauty and the beast in the form of extraordinary musical fluidity. The album is a brilliant collage of raw emotions and diary annotations. Queen of Denmark is, without doubt, total lush.
